Millet Magic: Are We Ignoring What Our Grandparents Knew?

Let’s be real for a second. We’ve all been raised on rotis. It’s our comfort food. But have you ever noticed that "heavy" feeling right after lunch? That afternoon slump where you just want to crawl under your desk and sleep?

For years, we’ve blamed the work or the weather, but it might actually be the wheat. Now, I’m not saying wheat is "evil," but it has changed over the decades. It’s stickier and harder on the gut. That’s why everyone is suddenly talking about Millets—those ancient, slightly "ugly" grains like Bajra, Jowar, and Ragi.

They aren't just for birds; they are for us. Here’s why your body is probably craving them:

1. The "Anti-Bloat" Secret

Wheat has gluten, and let’s face it, many of us aren’t great at digesting it. It sits in your stomach like glue. Jowar and Bajra, on the other hand, are 100% gluten-free. The first thing you’ll notice when you switch? Your stomach feels flat and "quiet." No more strange noises or that feeling like you swallowed a brick.

2. Energy That Actually Lasts

Wheat gives you a quick "sugar high" followed by a crash. Millets are different. They are complex—they take their time to digest. When you have a Bajra roti, the energy is released slowly into your blood. It’s like a slow-burning candle instead of a firework. You’ll find yourself still going strong at 4 PM without needing that third cup of chai.

3. Ragi: The Bone-Builder

If you’re worried about your bones or have kids at home, Ragi is your best friend. It has three times more calcium than milk. Yes, you read that right. It’s a literal powerhouse of minerals. Plus, it’s rich in iron, which is a huge deal if you’ve been feeling tired or anaemic lately.

4. Heart Health & Weight (The Bonus)

Because millets are packed with fiber, they act like a "clean-up crew" for your arteries. They help lower bad cholesterol and keep you full for so long that you won't even look at that bag of chips in the evening. It’s the easiest way to lose weight without feeling like you’re "on a diet."

"But they taste like cardboard!" (How to actually eat them)

This is where most people give up. They try to make a 100% Bajra roti, it breaks, it’s dry, and they go back to wheat.

Don't do that. Start small. Mix 25% Jowar flour into your regular atta. Or try a Ragi porridge for breakfast with some jaggery. Use Bajra to make a warm, spicy Khichdi on a cold night. It’s about making it a part of your life, not a punishment.

Dr. Vertika Kulshrestha- We don’t need "superfoods" from the other side of the world. We just need to go back to what worked for centuries.
